XUV 300 is Mahindra’s most promising compact SUV yet

The car gets nice-looking projector headlamps and vertical LED lights that connect these headlamps to the fog lamps.

The compact SUV wars have not died down for the last few years. Mahindra itself has made several attempts to achieve glory in this segment but none look more promising than the XUV 300. The car comes with many segment first features that Mahindra hopes will give it an edge over its rivals.

Looks

Just like the big brother XUV 500 even this baby SUV’s design is inspired by the Cheetah. On the front, there’s a chrome laden grille along with skid plates down below. The car gets nice looking projector headlamps and what is really striking are the vertical Led lights that connect these headlamps to the fog lamps. The XUV 300 gets a heavy dose of cladding all over the car which makes it look sporty. The 17-inch Diamond cut alloys also are there but only in the top variant. Rest of the models will come with 16-inch steel wheels. The dual roof option is there as well and the car gets roof rails too. The rear gets split LED lamps along with a nicely designed spoiler and skid plates. However, keeping it sub 4 metres has been a challenge as is evident from a rear that doesn’t look proportionate to the front.
The car also gets rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps and front parking sensors.

Interior

Now this is a car that’s loaded with features, some of which you will not see in any other car in the segment. A 7-inch touch screen system is very functional and gives a lot options. It is compatible with both Apple car play and Android Auto and also gives reverse camera feed. The dual tone on the dash looks nice and ergonomically the car feels good too as the buttons are placed very conveniently. The car gets a dual zone climate control and you also set memory functions for temperature control. The Instrument cluster gives a lot of vital information including the direction the tyres are facing. The car also gets rain sensing wipers, automatic headlamps and front parking sensors. And presence of a sunroof makes this XUV even more versatile.  The car gets seatbelt reminders even for the second row. Boot space seems adequate on the car, and while Mahindra hasn’t yet revealed the figures here it certainly isn’t the most generous in the segment.

Engine

The good thing is that the compact SUV comes with both petrol and diesel engine options. The tried and tested 1.5 litre 115 bhp mill is what we sampled on our drive on the roads of Goa. The torque figure of the 300 Nm this XUV comes is the best in segment and that shows when you drive it around. Superior low end torque is what works well for the car. A light clutch and an slick gearshift make the XUV 300 a car that is very easy to drive. The petrol is a 1.2 litre turbocharged mill that churns out a little lesser 110 PS and a decent torque of 200 Nm. There are only 6-speed manual gearbox options being offered with the car, at least for now. But the presence of Hill start Assist makes you miss the Automatic variant lesser on this one. The claimed mileage figures on the XUV 300 are 17 kmpl for the Petrol variants and an even superior 20 kmpl for the diesel models. The Ecosense technology used here rates your driving habits and helps improve the fuel efficiency of the car.

Handling & Ride

A sub-compact SUV with a raised seating position will make you think that the car will have a fair bit of body roll. But here is where the X100 platform from SSangyong comes into play as it offers a rigid and strong base for the car. It only helps further that the SUV has the longest wheelbase and the widest track in the segment. And these attributes make it a car that is extremely stable and one which gives a planted drive at all speeds. The suspension has been altered for Indian road conditions and does an impressive job of dealing with the undulations. And with a height adjustable seat and steering finding an ideal drive position is not really a challenge. What you get here is a commanding view of the road. What also is of use are different steering modes—Comfort, Normal and Sport, and you can choose depending on driving conditions how engaging or light you steering wheel should be.

Verdict

The Mahindra XUV 300 is sure to make a major impact in the very popular compact SUV segment. The Tata Nexon, Ford Ecosport and Maruti Suzuki Brezza have one more potent rival to deal with. In fact the Hyundai Creta could also be hit to an extent. Mahindra has also put a special emphasis on safety in the new XUV 300. The car gets disc brakes on all 4 wheels and best in segment 7 airbags. Then there’s tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS with EBD and ESP.

Mahindra is set to introduce a new petrol engine for the KUV100.

Mahindra KUV100 Facelift Exterior

The 1.2-litre MFalcon D75 turbocharged diesel engine will be axed
The upcoming BS6 norms have made many manufacturers discontinue diesel engines as it would be a financially draining task for them. Adding to the list, Mahindra is now set to discontinue the diesel engine that is on offer with the KUV100 and will not update that oil burner to comply with the BS6 norms.
Mahindra has already invested more than Rs. 10,000 crores to develop vehicles to comply with the stricter emission norms and will not invest more to develop the 1.2-litre diesel engine. It is currently powered by a 1.2-litre mFALCON G80 petrol engine. This engine develops 82 BHP and 155 Nm of torque and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
Mahindra is developing a new petrol engine in collaboration with SsangYong as the market is shifting to petrol-powered vehicles due to the insignificance of the price difference between diesel and petrol. The petrol engine will be introduced in the festive period of 2019 while the BS6 compliant engines will be in the market by the final quarter of the FY.
The Indian manufacturer is also set to launch a fully electric version of the Mahindra KUV100 called the e-KUV100 that was displayed at the 2018 Auto Expo. The KUV100 will continue to be sold with the petrol engine and will be upgraded to the BS6 emission standards before the deadline date.

Mahindra KUV100 Diesel Engine

– The diesel-powered KUV100 will be offered at dealerships till stocks last
– Mahindra will not invest more money to update the oil burner to comply with the BS6 norms
– Mahindra is co-developing a new petrol engine along with SsangYong.

Mahindra Thar: Real reasons why people still buy it!

It has been over eight years since Mahindra launched the Thar in October 2010. The Thar was developed on a pretty low budget and underneath the classic Jeep body is basically a mix of the Bolero and the Scorpio. Despite not being refined or luxurious, many people still aspire to own one. In this post, we’ll take a look at the real reasons why people buy the Mahindra Thar

It’s a JEEP thing

Mahindra has been building Jeeps under license from Willys since the 1950s and the Thar is the latest vehicle to sport the classic JEEP design. The Thar invokes feelings of nostalgia whenever you take a look at it and while Jeep does sell the Wrangler in India, getting a hold of one can clean out bank balances. The Thar offers the same old-school design at a more affordable price.

The ‘TINA’ factor

For those wondering what the word means, TINA stands for ‘There is No Alternative’. In this case of the Thar, this especially true as no other manufacturer offers affordable off-roaders at around the same price as the Thar except for the Maruti Gypsy. However, the Gypsy is only offered with a petrol engine and does not offer power steering or air conditioning. Another alternative is the Force Gurkha but it feels rather crude to drive and its dealership and service network leaves a lot to be desired.

It’s a proper “bro” car

The Mahindra Thar is the very definition of a bro car. It is a vehicle that almost every male loves and wishes to own at some point in their life. Its muscular looks and open top form make it appeal to the ‘macho’ side of almost every person of the male gender. For the bros, there’s nothing cooler than driving to the pub or anywhere else in a topless jeep especially if you get another of your bros in the passenger seat and the Thar easily ticks all the boxes required.

Super customizable

The Thar is a vehicle that can easily be tinkered with and there numerous customization options available for the off-roader, including quite a few from Mahindra. The Thar from Group 1 Mahindra is, in essence, a black piece of canvas waiting for you to put your personal touch on it. Everything from light bars and aftermarket rims to snorkels can be added to the Thar with an amount of ease you’ll never find when modifying any other vehicle.

Accessible

The Mahindra Thar is the easiest accessible off-roader that you can currently buy. You can currently walk into any dealership in Mahindra’s widespread network that stretches to even the smallest of cities and order a Thar and get it delivered to you within a few weeks.

Unlike the Thar, the availability of its rivals the Maruti Gypsy and the Force Gurkha. While the Gypsy is only produced on a made-to-order basis, the lack of Force Motors dealerships means that getting your hand on either SUV quickly isn’t something that is possible.
