Glitchy Brakes
The most widely reported problem with the XUV500 was with the braking system. This problem was limited to the first-generation Mahindra XUV500 for sale and wasn’t present in the succeeding generations. The brakes on the first generation XUV500 were plagued with several problems. The most common issue detected by a lot of people was the emission of a grinding or screeching noise when the brake pedal was pressed.


Apart from that the brakes lacked bite and felt very wooden. The owners confirmed that resetting the excess play or bleeding the brakes did not solve the issue. The solution was provided by Mahindra in the form of free replacement for all old units with brand-new pads and pedals manufactured by Bosch. So be sure to keep an eye on how the brakes are functioning on the Mahindra XUV500 for sale you intend to purchase. If they are emitting any screeching or grinding sounds, you know what the problem is.

Doors Rattling and Not Closing
This issue is more commonly reported in the second-generation models. The panel beneath the doors of the XUV500 is highly susceptible to vibrations and excessive rattling. This becomes very apparent when you are driving over a rough patch or an uneven road. The cause behind this is loose screws and nuts beneath the door panels grinding over each other or other metallic parts.

Another common issue with the doors is that they won’t shut properly in one go. They have to be repeatedly slammed to get a sure shot lock. This problem is caused by a defective locking mechanism. The lock issue is more prevalent on the front doors than on the back. Infotainment System Issues

In order to fix this issue, Mahindra released a thoroughly updated firmware which overwrites the existing one installed from the factory. This firmware change is enough to fix all the issues in one go. So be sure to check all the functions of the infotainment system on the used XUV500 you are looking to purchase.

Defective Clutch Burning Out Quickly
Certain models from the first generation of the XUV500 were highly prone to clutch issues. Several owners complained that the clutch of the Mahindra XUV500 was suffering from various problems. The most common problem was the extravagantly light feel. While a light clutch is preferred in traffic, the XUV500’s clutch was so light that it felt devoid of any feedback on the whole. Another prevalent issue was the plates burnt off very quickly. A few of the owners suffering from this issue had replaced the plates twice in an interval of 40000 km only to see the plates dying off again.

The culprit behind this issue was an altered clutch design which Mahindra introduced in February 2013. To fix this issue, Mahindra personally contacted the owners and replaced the clutch mechanisms free of cost. They switched back to the older design which where none of these problems were observed. So as a final tip, ensure that the clutch action on the used XUV500 you intend to purchase is appropriate. In this case, it would be best to get a professional mechanic to inspect the clutch plates from the inside to identify wear and tear.

Warning Lights Appearing Randomly
This is a very peculiar issue that needs to be handled with caution. Many owners have reported that the warning lights on the XUV500 randomly light up for no rhyme or reason. The most common lights that pop up are the ABS warning lights and the hill ascent/descent lights. If the hill ascent light randomly pops up and you’re normally driving on the road, it’s not a cause for worry, as it is obvious that it is indeed a malfunction.

On the other hand, if the ABS Warning light comes up, you can’t immediately identify if the warning light is defective or if there is actually a problem with the ABS system. The cause behind this is defective or loose connections of the lights of the respective warning symbols. This issue usually comes up after a few kilometres of driving. So, be sure to observe the instrument cluster of the used XUV500 you intend to purchase for random warning lights popping up.

The Indian automaker Mahindra’s parent company Mahindra & Mahindra is known across the world for having ventures in numerous industries but there are some things about the company that not everyone is aware of. So today, we would like to share with you some of the lesser-known facts about this carmaker.This article covers the Mahindra auto brand as a whole - not just in the South African context.

Started off as a steel trading company

Before making a huge name in the automotive industry, the revered Mahindra Group began its journey as a steel trading company. It was founded on 2 October 1945 in Ludhiana as Mahindra & Mohammed by brothers Kailash Chandra Mahindra and Jagdish Chandra Mahindra along with Malik Ghulam Muhammad.[6] Anand Mahindra, the present Chairman of Mahindra Group, is the grandson of Jagdish Chandra Mahindra.

India’s first manufacturer of off-road vehicles

Although Mahindra is well recognized as India’s largest producer of utility vehicles, few people are aware that it was also the nation’s first manufacturer of off-road vehicles. In 1949, the business started making Willys CJ3A Jeeps after obtaining the license to do so in India. A 4-wheel drive off-road vehicle known as the CJ3A was first made available to Indian consumers. Willys then improved the CJ3A into the CJ3B after Kaiser Motors purchased it.

Owns the first electric car brand in India

The electric arm of Mahindra Auto, presently known as Mahindra Electric Mobility Ltd, was previously known as the REVA Electric Car Company. REVA, headquartered in Bangalore, was India’s first electric automobile manufacturer. The company was involved in the design and production of small electric cars. Owned Peugeot Motorcycles

Many people might not be aware of this, but Mahindra also owns a historic motorcycle brand in a portfolio of companies. In October 2014, the company purchased a 51% controlling share in Peugeot Motorcycles, a French maker of scooters and compact motorbikes. At the time, PSA Group retained a 49% stake in the company and the right to use its brand name, but in 2019 M&M eventually bought the whole company.

Owns the legendary Italian automotive design house – Pininfarina

For those unaware, one of the most iconic brands in the automotive world responsible for designing cars like the Ferrari 275 GTB, F40, 550 Maranello and a ton of others is the Italian car design firm and coachbuilder – Pininfarina S.p.A. and it is owned by Mahindra and Mahindra. In December 2015, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd and affiliate Tech Mahindra Ltd, through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), agreed to buy a 76.06% stake in Italian car designer Pininfarina for €25.3 million (around Rs.186.7 crore).

Joint Venture with Ford India

In its hopes to survive in India, the American automotive manufacturer Ford's Indian subsidiary Ford India in October 2019, entered into a joint venture with Mahindra & Mahindra. The Indian utility maker at the time acquired a controlling 51% stake. Although this venture was very short-lived and in January 2021, Mahindra ended its collaboration with Ford owing to global economic and business conditions caused by the pandemic.

First global model – Scorpio

The Scorpio, one of the brand’s most popular SUVs, was the first vehicle Mahindra ever developed for the international market by the brand. The in-house integrated design and production team of Mahindra & Mahindra conceptualized and created the Scorpio. Over the years, the car has been the recipient of three Indian awards, including the “Car of the Year” award from Business Standard Motoring as well as the “Best SUV of the Year” and the “Best Car of the Year” awards, both from BBC World’s Wheels. Recently the company also launched the newest iteration of this SUV – the Scorpio-N and the has also broken many records of the brand.

Mahindra also produces Military Vehicles

Beginning in 1947 with the importation of the Willys Jeep, which had been widely utilized in World War II, the Indian carmaker has also manufactured and assembled military vehicles in addition to producing automobiles, trucks, and tractors. The Mahindra Armored Light Specialist Vehicle (ALSV) and the Mahindra Armored Straton Armoured Personnel Carrier are two of its military vehicles under the brand name Mahindra Emirates Vehicle Armouring (MEVA, Mahindra Armoured) (APC).

Largest tractor manufacturer in the world

Apart from being India’s largest UV maker, the company also has the title of the world’s highest-selling tractor brand by volume. Mahindra Tractors, the subsidiary, has a booming market in North America and Australia. The company is India’s largest tractor producer, with a current capacity of 150,000 tractors per year. In 1963, M&M built its first tractor, the Mahindra B-275, as part of a joint venture with International Harvester to build tractors bearing the Mahindra trademark for the Indian market.

Mahindra Racing

Out of the 11 founding teams in the all-electric street racing championship, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Mahindra Racing is the only one representing India in the racing competition. In 2017, the squad won the Berlin Electric Race. The group was the first to be awarded a Three-Star FIA Environmental Accreditation grade.

Mahindra Bolero Among The Cheapest Double Cab Bakkies On The Market In South Africa

Over time, bakkies have evolved into vehicles every bit as kitted and comfortable as passenger cars. Problem is, their price tags have also evolved, but not everyone has that kind of cash lying around or the kind of monthly income to afford instalments of over R20k.

Fortunately for buyers looking for affordable workhorses, Mahindra has been steadily building their much more affordable bakkie repertoires in the shadows of the big boys. And it is not surprising that it partly dominates the list of South Africa’s most affordable bakkies with the Mahindra Bolero and Mahindra Pik Up.


Mahindra Bolero 2.5 TD double cab

As its honest looks proudly declare, the Bolero is more of a workhorse than a product aimed at the leisure market. And one that has earned an enormous reputation over the years.

The two-wheel drive Bolero is powered by a 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine which sends 74 kW of power and 235 Nm of torque to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.

Mahindra claims fuel consumption of 9.5 L/100 km, which will give the Bolero a range of 579 km on its 55-litre tank. It has a payload of 885 kg.

The interior is as basic as it gets, but air-conditioning and central locking are nothing to scoff at.

For an R44 000 premium, you can upgrade to the 4×4 version, which at R293 999 tops South Africa’s list for cheapest bakkies in double cab four-wheel drive guise. It has a similar payload to the 4×2 version.

New vs Old Mahindra Thar

Comparing the expected changes on the new SUV

The second-generation Mahindra Thar's test mules were first spotted years ago and the SUV is expected to be launched in the South African market soon. Let's take a look at the changes in the new model as compared to the old Thar.

It was over 4 years ago, April 2019 to be precise, when rumours first surfaced that Mahindra was working on second-generation Thar. Later in 2020, the Indian SUV maker pulled the plug on the first-gen Thar that was launched in 2010 (find a used Mahindra Thar?). Since then, we have been hearing a lot about the new Thar, have spotted its test mules a number of times, and have been patiently waiting for the company to reveal some official details about this. We were hoping to see the hardcore off-roader at Auto Expo this year but to no avail. However, the word on the street is that Mahindra could take the wraps off the all-new Thar in a  few months' time. Let's quickly take a look at the changes we expect to see in the new generation Thar as compared to the old Mahindra, now used, Thar.

New Mahindra Thar vs Old Thar: Design

New Mahindra Thar will look quite similar to the previous model, especially in terms of the boxy silhouette. However, the 2023 Thar will get a new seven-slat grille, new front bumper, new design for alloy wheels, and redesigned tail lights. But the biggest difference is that the new SUV will be wider than its predecessor. This should not only make it more spacious but more planted, especially at high speeds and over corners. 2023 Mahindra Thar is likely to get a projector headlamp set up on the top-spec unit while other variants will have halogen units. However, there is a possibility that the carmaker could offer LED lamps, which will be of great help over rough and remote terrains.

New Mahindra Thar vs Old Thar: Interior and features

The biggest change in the new Thar will be with regard to its interior layout and feature list. The first generation Thar had a very basic interior layout with very limited features, but the upcoming model will come sporting a more upmarket dashboard. It will also get more features like a touchscreen infotainment system with support for Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, built-in navigation, a semi-digital instrument console with a larger MID (multi-information display), maybe even automatic AC, etc. 

New Mahindra Thar vs Old Thar: Safety features

Mahindra had to discontinue the first-gen Thar as it was not in compliance with the latest safety norms mandated by the Indian government. But the new one will be in line with the safety norms, including pedestrian safety rules. 2023 Mahindra Thar will also get dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, a speed alert system, etc. 

New Mahindra Thar vs Old Thar: Specs

Powering the 2023 Thar will be a new 2.0-litre diesel engine that will be offered in combination with a five-speed manual gearbox. And as before, the SUV will be available with a reliable 4X4 drive system. There is also a chance that the SUV could use the 2.2-litre unit which powers Scorpio and XUV500.

Everyone Is Talking About The Mahindra XUV700 Makes

We simply loved this article by Kabelo Chabalala about the Mahindta XUV700 for sale - a new-age luxury SUV available in South Africa.

On two occasions, the Mahindra XUV700 almost gave me a heart attack.

The first instance involved parking in the underground parking at the Mall@Reds in Centurion for a quick supermarket dash. Upon my return, five car guards were surrounding the car, frantically looking for something. I was alarmed! And paranoid that someone had bumped the car.

The real reason was far more innocent.

About 10 metres from the car, I took out the car key to unlock it. This was to signal to them that I was approaching, but instead of them moving away from the car, at the sight of the pop-up door handles, they lost their cool and started screaming. They were in total awe. The top-of-the-range 2.0T AX7 L finished in its signature Electric Blue hue had them losing their minds. In unison, they all asked, “Which brand is this beautiful car? We circled the car trying to find the name with no luck. We also don’t recognise the logo”. 

In the second incident, I had taken the car for a wash around Centurion. As I sat at a restaurant across the car wash, I watched a man, probably in his late 40s or early 50s, walking straight to the bay where they were vacuuming the car, to inquire about it.

He circled the car three times while I watched from a distance.

Luckily, I had told the ladies and gentlemen at the car wash where I would be, and one of them came to me to ask about the car and confirm the brand name.

It dawned on me that either the carmaker did not make enough noise about the new Mahindra SUV logo, or people are simply ignorant. Nevertheless, the new logo debuted on the XUV700, which explains why a lot of people did know that it is the new Mahindra logo, specifically for their Sport Utility Vehicle range.

This particular change was inspired by the brand’s belief that as a driver of one of their SUVs, you can go where you want, when you want, in complete style. And style was not in short supply when it came to the XUV700. The biggest talking point of this car for me is the price the XUV700 is for sale at, which is no more than R560,000 for the top-of-the-range variant, AX7 L, which I drove.

It comes in three offerings - the mid-specced AX7, which will make your pocket less rich at just over R500,000, and the AX5 base model, which is priced at around R480,000.

Anyone with a big family will be happy with this price tag. And it is not a lazy car.

When you get on the open road, with all three powered by a 2.0-Litre turbo petrol engine, the acceleration to the legal maximum speed of 120km/h makes you appreciate the 149kW and 380Nm it produces. It is a front-wheeler with a six-speed automatic gearbox.

With its big size, I found myself wishing for a moment it was an all-wheel drive, but I quickly remembered that this car was for comfort, proving it is indeed targeting family-oriented customers. I am willing to bet that, had I kept that car for one more week, there would have been even more drama surrounding it, from the church parking lot to our garage.

Mahindra Pik Up For Sale Now Available As Refrigeration Unit

 


Mahindra has added a refrigeration unit to its 
line-up of specialist bakkies, which includes the Pik Up Ambulance, the Pik Up Mining Specification bakkie and the Pik Up Game Viewer. 

All these models, which have been developed locally, are assembled with the assistance of Mahindra’s facility in KwaZulu-Natal, which means they retain their factory warranty. 


“When we opened our local assembly facility in 2018, we emphasised that this not only strengthens our commitment to South Africa as our second home outside of India, but it allows us to adapt our vehicles to local needs and budgets,” says Mahindra South Africa CEO Rajesh Gupta.

“The Pik Up Karoo is perhaps our most popular and best-known local addition to the range. But for professionals looking for a reliable, capable and affordable game viewer, mining-approved bakkie, ambulance and now refrigerated unit, these specialised units are very popular indeed.” 

Based on the Pik Up S4 chassis cab, the refrigeration unit Mahindra Pik Up for sale has a load capacity of 733 kg in its refrigerated box and/or a 6 385 l loading volume.

The unit’s Pik Up underpinnings also mean that it can tow up to 750 kg, while it can also, on request, be fitted with a full 4x4 drive train for rural applications. 

The load capacity is thanks to the design where the large square insulated box is fitted above the wheel arches. This means that the box can be fully optimised, without any intrusion from the wheel arches or other parts of the chassis.

The refrigerated box itself is available in two versions, a chiller with a maximum cooling ability of ­–5 ˚C, and a full freezer unit with a maximum cooling ability of –20˚C.

“By developing two options, we can cater to both the retail market with products such as meat, ice cream and other chilled or frozen foods and the medical market, which needs much colder temperatures to transport vaccines and other medicines,” says Gupta.

Both the chiller and freezer options are powered by an additional compressor in the engine bay, which, in turn, is linked to a digital control unit in the cabin.

This unit offers real-time feedback on the temperature inside the refrigerated box and allows the driver to always monitor and control the temperature.

The chiller and freezer units are also fitted with an evaporator and condenser unit fitted to the front of the refrigerated box, and it extends over the roof of the Pik Up.

Mahindra SUVs Rise In Popularity According To Record Sales

Exports for the month for Mahindra were at 2,115 units, and the company sold 5,697 vehicles of 3-wheelers in March 2023.

Mahindra & Mahindra announced its highest-ever auto sales number for March 2023 which is recorded at 35,976 vehicles with a growth of 31 percent. The Indian brand has hit a sixer and clocked the highest-ever annual sales for SUVs at 3,56,961 units recording a growth of 60 percent.

In the passenger vehicle segment, Mahindra has sold 35,997 units, registering a growth of 30 percent in March 2023 and clocked an annual sale of 3,59,253 vehicles up 59 percent.

Mahindra’s commercial vehicle segment is also in the green with a growth of 12 percent and a sale of 22,282 vehicles in March 2023. Sale numbers for the year accounted for 2,48,576 vehicles with a growth of 40 percent. The LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) segment recorded its highest-ever annual sales of 1,98,121 units in FY23. Mahindra’s truck and bus division also recorded positive numbers and a growth of 77 percent after selling 1,469 units. The annual sale of 10,036 units accounts for a growth of 56 percent.

Exports for the month for Mahindra were at 2,115 units, and the company sold 5,697 vehicles of 3-wheelers in March 2023.

According to Veejay Nakra, President of the Automotive Division, Mahindra and Mahindra said that the company has recorded growth of 50 percent for the auto sector on a yearly basis and the highest ever numbers, in almost all segments of the business.

Mahindra Now Offers A Range Of Special Edition Double Cab Bakkies In SA


It seems Mahindra has discovered the secret of keeping their double cab bakkies relevant for extended periods by introducing special edition models. The Indian automaker's popularity is climbing the ranks in South Africa, and they're showing healthy sales every month in the regular National Automobile Association Manufacturers of Southern Africa (Naamsa) report. Its local plant in Durban has also recently just rolled off its ten-thousandth vehicle off the line.

The brand says its building on the momentum created by its new "Twin Peak" brand identity by expanding its dynamic range of new Authentic Bakkies with a total of three special editions Mahindra double cab Pik Up models.

Mahindra now has three Pik Up models to expand on the locally-designed Karoo range. The automaker says the reason for the new models is to signify the authenticity of an honest brand designed around the core needs of customers who need reliable and capable bakkies that enable them to explore even the most challenging terrain.

The new Mahindra double cabs are named the Pik Up Karoo Dusk, Karoo Dawn and Karoo Storm, the new models will offer many of the same features that made the first edition Karoo Dusk a sell-out success. They have several new features, including an all-leather interior and custom paint colours.

The abilities of the Pik Up have now been enhanced to allow customers to pursue the most challenging terrain and unleash the explorer in them in the most rewarding way.

Rajesh Gupta, Mahindra South Africa CEO, says the Karoo nameplate signifies their commitment to South Africa and the way South Africans have adopted the Pik Up lifestyle range as their desire to 'Unleash The Explorer in You' and enjoy the adventure and family fun.

"This is equally true of our new Karoo Dawn, Dusk and Storm models, and we are very excited to showcase our range of Authentic Bakkies to our fans and customers."

With its special milestone reached, the growth in production underscores the popularity of the Pik Up range, which has been one of the fastest-growing bakkie brands in the last five years, thanks in no small part to its combination of reliability and capability.


So what's new?

Firstly, the upgraded Karoo specification is now standard. All three special edition models are built on the upgraded Pik Up Karoo platform and feature new decals. The same goes for the branded Karoo interior carpets, a nudge bar and load bin-mounted sports bar with Karoo detailing.

The cloth seats have been upgraded to leather upholstery, and the infotainment system has been bumped up from a 7" to a large HD 9" system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and in-built maps.


Rugged and refined

Mahindra says all three special Karoo models will be fitted with heavy-duty off-road suspension, off-road tyres, and hardened 4x4 rims, including an additional off-road rim for the spare wheel.

All models also have front and rear steel bumpers for better off-road clearance and are securely anchored to the chassis. They also offer recovery and hitching points for off-road use. The rear step has been trimmed with non-slip diamond plating for easy access to the load bin, and the front bumper is fitted with special LED driving lights.

Load bins are also rubberised, and the rear over-fenders give the bakkie a purposeful stance and differentiate each special edition model from its siblings.


Automatic available

All Karoo and Karoo Special Edition models are fitted with Mahindra's mHawk 2.2 turbodiesel engine, which delivers 103kW at 3 750rpm and a solid 320Nm in a broad power band between 1 500r/min and 2 800r/min.

In the Special Edition models, buyers are treated to the new six-speed Aisin automatic transmission, making it the perfect stand-out bakkie for every type of user. This transmission was extensively tested in South Africa before its global launch on the Pik Up Karoo S11 in 2020.

All Karoo Dusk, Karoo Storm and Karoo Dawn models are sold with a four-year or 120 000km mechanical warranty and a five-year or 90 000 km service plan.
