New Mahindra Pik-Up Special Editions Were Made To Be Legends

Mahindra took its Karoo Dawn, Karoo Dusk and Karoo Storm double cabs on an epic three-week adventure which cemented the brand's durability in the minds of buyers.

The Mahindra Karoo convoy departed to unforgiving terrain in South Africa, Namibia and Lesotho.

“In June, we revealed our new corporate identity and our brand promise – to Unleash the Explorer in You. While every Mahindra bakkie or SUV delivers on that promise, the three Karoo flagship models do so with aplomb,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.

“We realise that Mahindra is in a unique position to help South Africans unleash their inner explorer with our range of accessible and affordable products and with made-for-purpose adventure vehicles like the Karoo Dusk, Dawn and Storm.”

The Mahindra Adventure

Departing from the Mahindra head office in Centurion, Gauteng, the expedition of three Pik Ups started heading west to the border of South Africa and Namibia.

Along the way, they visited some of the most demanding off-road trails and routes in the Free State and Northern Cape as well as the Mahindra dealers en route.

The convoy also made its way to KwaZulu-Natal to conquer some of the most challenging 4×4 courses and routes that they can find. From here, they made their way back to Mahindra’s South African headquarters.

“Each leg of our tour was carefully chosen for its beauty, its challenging routes and its proximity to some of our best-performing dealers. We will visit the dealers along the route to show them the new Karoo Dawn, Dusk and Storm and to whet their customers’ appetite,” says Rajesh.

The team was led on an adventure at every step of the journey with clues they receive daily from Mahindra and their task is to navigate to their destination. Customers following the adventure, could live the journey and become part of the experience.

Flagship features made accessible

The Mahindra Dawn, Dusk and Storm together form the flagship model range for Mahindra’s Authentic Bakkie range. All three models are fitted with a dedicated heavy-duty, off-road suspension that is unique to these models.

All three models are equipped with Mahindra’s tried and trusted 2.2 mHawk turbodiesel engine that delivers 103kW and 320Nm.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels, in 2WD, or to all wheels in 4WD low- and high-range via the Mahindra six-speed automatic transmission.

While each version is unique in its design, all three versions share luxuries such as climate control, electric windows, cruise control and leather seats.

Also standard across all three models are a special hardy Karoo carpet set, a nudge bar, a load bin-mounted Karoo sports bar and a rubberised load bin. A custom-designed set of hardened off-road rims are fitted to all three models, including to their spare wheels.

Mahindra has also fitted a custom-designed, off-road approach and departure bumper set to all three flagship models. These bumpers are anchored to the chassis and have LED front fog lamps, heavy-duty steel recovery points, non-slip steps and even a ready-to-fit space for a winch.

Lastly, all three flagship models also have a new 9-inch touch-screen infotainment system with HD display, in-built maps and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Karoo Dusk, Karoo Storm and Karoo Dawn models are all sold with a 4-year/120 000km mechanical warranty and a 5-year/90 000km service plan.

A Quick Look At The Mahindra Scorpio SUV

It would seem that the current Mahindra Scorpio for sale has been under development for forever now. But every day, we inch closer to the day when this SUV will be upgraded or refreshed again. Set to be one of the biggest car launches in India in 2022, a new Scorpio SUV was spotted on a test run. While the test mule was draped in camouflage, it manages to give away some details nonetheless. So, we figured, now is a good time to do a check-in and see what is known about the Mahindra SUV in India so far.

This SUV will sport a new chrome grille with the brand's 'Twin Peaks' logo, twin-pod LED projector headlamps, LED DRLs, LED foglamps, roof rails, new alloy wheels, rear spoiler, etc.

Inside, the Scorpio will likely get a completely redesigned dashboard and a whole lot of modern features. We reckon the home-grown automaker will offer provisions such as a touchscreen infotainment system, a multi-function steering wheel, an analogue instrument cluster, an electric sunroof, and a digital multi-information display, among other things.
Now, on to the next-gen Mahindra Scorpio SUV's engine options and specs; while the company is yet to confirm these details, word has it Scorpio SUV will be available with a choice between a 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel unit.

Mahindra XUV700 - Achieves The Highest Crash Test Score In GNCAP History

The XUV700 and upcoming Scorpio-N will carry Mahindra’s new generation of authentic and aspirational Mahindra SUVs, geared to raise the bar and get the driver’s heart racing with its sci-fi technology, spirited performance and world-class safety.

South Africans had their first opportunity to view Mahindra’s new range of authentic SUVs and two of the most highly anticipated vehicles from the brand at the India Day Carnival.

On display were, among others, Mahindra’s new XUV700 flagship, which will soon champion the group’s line-up in South Africa. Crowned the Indian Car of the Year 2022, the XUV700 amassed over 80 000 pre-orders shortly after being launched. It is expected to find similar favour with South African customers when it is launched later this year.

Aside from showcasing the new Mahindra “Twin Peaks” logo, the XUV700 will introduce Mahindra’s new brand promise to Unleash the Explorer in You and reaffirm the brand’s customer value proposition of offering authentic and capable products from its range of Authentic SUVs and Authentic Bakkies.

The Mahindra XUV700 recently made global headlines as the safest car ever tested by the GNCAP, achieving the highest combined occupant safety ratings for any car tested and receiving the Safer Choice Award for best-in-class safety.

The Scorpio-N joins the line-up of authentic SUVs early in the new year. Its arrival is highly anticipated both here and abroad. For instance, when bookings opened for the Scorpio-N in India, the first 25 000 bookings were received within a minute, and 100 000 orders were placed within the first half an hour. This makes it the car with the highest number of launch bookings in the world.

Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, says the India Day Carnival is the perfect platform to showcase the new models, giving visitors the opportunity to touch and feel these and other sought-after Mahindra models.

“Mahindra has been actively involved in South Africa’s automotive market for the past 18 years, and we have seen tremendous growth and brand loyalty over these years,” said Gupta.

“We are a true part of the South African landscape and believe that these new models will lead the way to increased popularity among local motorists owing to its performance, design, safety and innovative features.”

The India Day Carnival is organised by the India Club of South Africa and attracts thousands of visitors annually. It offers a diverse programme of live events and displays that showcase India’s rich heritage in South Africa.

The New Mahindra XUV300 Is A Safe SUV With A Very Good Price

“Generally South Africans can be a bit laissez-faire when it comes to safety and their car purchases.

We tend to take “bargain” before brakes, thinking it will never happen to us. With our road conditions as they are and no sign of them ever-improving and our abysmal track record when it comes to road safety and obeying the most basic rules of the road, it’s more a case of when it happens rather than if it happens.

This is especially so when it comes to first-time car buyers who don’t yet have the necessary experience or skill to avoid an ugly situation.

This is why it’s important that manufacturers wear their ratings on their sleeves so that before we put down our hard-earned cash we are completely aware of which safety features will come into play when things go awry.

Ring in the new Mahindra XUV300, touted as the “safest car in Africa”.

When it was first launched in May 2019 the Mahindra XUV300 received a five-star rating as the safest car ever tested by the Global New Car Assessment Programme (GNCAP) in 2020.

Last year Mahindra South Africa submitted their own locally homologated entry level XUV300 and it received the nod of Africa’s safest car.

The 2022 version has received a nip and tuck but the safety features remain.

During side and front offset crash tests it was awarded a score of 16.42 out of 17 for adult protection, four stars for child protection and “good'' and “adequate” in occupant protection, cabin intrusion and vehicle body deformation.

So what do you get when you decide that safety is a priority?

At the entry level: two airbags, electronic stability control with emergency brakeforce distribution, disk brakes all round, ISOFIX seat mounts, speed-sensitive door locks, an impact sensing unlock function, collapsible steering column and pre-tensioners and load limiters on the front seatbelts.

The top-spec W8 version gets an additional five airbags including a side curtain and knee, dynamic cornering brake force that comes into play if the car is driven fast, a panic braking system, bright warning lights on the doors and hill hold assist.

Outside there's no change to the 2022 version except for new multi-spoke diamond cut 16-inch alloys on all versions except the entry-level W4 and the W4 SE which gets alloys with black and silver detailing.

It’s inside where things have improved significantly.

The interior moves away from the previous generation’s beige interior to black which gives it a more upmarket feel and is also easier to deal with if kids are being carted around.

The black seats are of the upholstery kind with the W8 models upgraded to leatherette.

There’s also a new nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system that replaces the previous seven-inch screen that’s Apple CarPlay and Android compatible.

The overall look and feel of the cabin are not unpleasant although there is a lot of hard plastic which is not uncommon at this price point.

Under the hood, there are two engine options in the form of a 1.2-litre turbo petrol that delivers 81kW and 200Nm and Mahindra’s new 1.5-litre turbo diesel with 85.8kW and 300Nm of torque.

Both are coupled to a six-speed manual transmission that drives the front wheels. There’s an automated manual version in India which thankfully the local management decided against. CVTs aren’t great but an automated manual takes it to a whole different level of frustration.

We got to drive the W8 diesel version and the overall impression was that it’s a lot better than the previous generation.

It’s a quiet willing engine with slick and easy gear changes and with its low down torque will easily idle along in heavy traffic or cruise along easily at highway speeds.

I can’t really tell you what it’s like under hard braking and sharp corners because we had an instructor with us as part of the defensive driving and hijack prevention course so no shenanigans were allowed.

But it’s a well-balanced family orientated SUV that makes all the right noises.

Interestingly while driving defensively with an instructor you really get to notice how badly people drive. No indicators, lane changing at will, driving in the wrong lane, swooping across two lanes to get to an off-ramp to name only a few.

It’s really messy out there and the XUV300 should certainly be on your list, especially with the interior improvements and most definitely because of the safety features it comes with.

The W4 models come with a five year/150 000km warranty and a three year 50 000km service plan while the rest of the range has the same warranty and a five year/90 000km service plan.

Will The Mahindra Bolero Range Be Updated This Year?

The Bolero is one of Mahindra’s best-selling models abroad of all time and the company has consistently been refreshing it with small updates over the two decades of it being on sale abroad. Mahindra is working on yet another update - what is it and will South Africa see this updated Mahindra Bolero?

2022 Mahindra Bolero: What Could Be New?

We do not expect any significant changes to the Bolero in terms of its design, although it could be updated with dual-tone paint as well as new single-tone paint options. As per sources, a new red paint shade with a contrasting dual-tone treatment could be on the cards for the new Bolero. The Bolero is currently available in just white – and the introduction of dual-tone colour schemes will give it a fresh lease of life.

The bigger update, however, will be on the inside. The current Mahindra Bolero range does not currently have airbags fitted. There have been mandates to fit dual airbags on all new cars as standard.

The Bolero will, thus, have to be fitted with driver and passenger-side airbags, which could result in tweaks to the dashboard. Currently, the Bolero gets a chunky grab handle on the passenger side of the dashboard, which leaves no room for an airbag, and, hence, will be revised to accommodate a passenger airbag.

2022 Mahindra Bolero: Features

Apart from the addition of airbags, we do not expect any changes to the equipment list. That means it will continue with its current features such as manual air-conditioning and power steering.

2022 Mahindra XUV300 In South Africa Review

The new Mahindra XUV300 is the latest to join the South African SUV group that continues to expand. This recently launched compact crossover is worth learning more about.

For the last few years, Mahindra has been adapting crossovers like the new Mahindra XUV300 and KUV100 into SUVs and selling them in the South African market.

The SUV has a striking, bold styling with a small grille. Despite its plastic front and rear plastic skid plates and that rugged look, it is by no means an off-road vehicle. Besides, it only has front-wheel drive. The high ground clearance of 180 mm gives the driver an exemplary top view of the road and makes spotting potholes that much easier. The body’s build is challenging, as it handles rough road surfaces well without any rattling sounds. The high-profile tyres handle difficult road surfaces and deliver a smooth ride. The interior is modern and of good quality.

There are two 1.5-litre diesel derivatives and two 1.2-litre petrol ones, with each available in various grades - either in the W4, W6 or the higher W8 model. Unfortunately, it is only available as a 6-speed manual. The diesel model is the only compact SUV in South Africa with a torque of 300 Nm. The petrol engine has a power output of 81 kW and a torque of 200 Nm.

New Mahindra XUV300 W8 diesel model details

The well-equipped top-spec XUV300 SUV has a touchscreen information system with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB ports and a camera for reversing. A disadvantage is that the steering column is only height-adjustable with no reach adjustment. A strange feature is some delay between switching on the ignition and when the glow plugs have warmed up before starting the engine. Skipping this short delay will result in the engine coughing and spluttering amidst much smoke.

What are the safety aspects of the XUV300?

It protects its occupants with 7 airbags (including a knee airbag2), ABS brakes and stability control. In addition, Hill assist technology prevents the car from going backwards.2 The Mahindra XUV300 has been awarded a 5-star GNCAP safety rating, so there is a high level of safety in that regard. The SUV has been fitted with standard ISOFIX anchor points at the rear with child locks for rear doors.
