The new Mahindra XUV300 is the latest to join the South African SUV group that continues to expand. This recently launched compact crossover is worth learning more about.
For the last few years, Mahindra has been adapting crossovers like the new Mahindra XUV300 and KUV100 into SUVs and selling them in the South African market.
The SUV has a striking, bold styling with a small grille. Despite its plastic front and rear plastic skid plates and that rugged look, it is by no means an off-road vehicle. Besides, it only has front-wheel drive. The high ground clearance of 180 mm gives the driver an exemplary top view of the road and makes spotting potholes that much easier. The body’s build is challenging, as it handles rough road surfaces well without any rattling sounds. The high-profile tyres handle difficult road surfaces and deliver a smooth ride. The interior is modern and of good quality.
There are two 1.5-litre diesel derivatives and two 1.2-litre petrol ones, with each available in various grades - either in the W4, W6 or the higher W8 model. Unfortunately, it is only available as a 6-speed manual. The diesel model is the only compact SUV in South Africa with a torque of 300 Nm. The petrol engine has a power output of 81 kW and a torque of 200 Nm.
New Mahindra XUV300 W8 diesel model details
The well-equipped top-spec XUV300 SUV has a touchscreen information system with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB ports and a camera for reversing. A disadvantage is that the steering column is only height-adjustable with no reach adjustment. A strange feature is some delay between switching on the ignition and when the glow plugs have warmed up before starting the engine. Skipping this short delay will result in the engine coughing and spluttering amidst much smoke.
What are the safety aspects of the XUV300?
It protects its occupants with 7 airbags (including a knee airbag2), ABS brakes and stability control. In addition, Hill assist technology prevents the car from going backwards.2 The Mahindra XUV300 has been awarded a 5-star GNCAP safety rating, so there is a high level of safety in that regard. The SUV has been fitted with standard ISOFIX anchor points at the rear with child locks for rear doors.
